This page shows you the melody notes for this theme music for the Star Trek film First Contact. The composer was Jerry Goldsmith. This is a simple version of the tune played one note at a time.
In order to put this tune up on the web I had to work out my own music notation using ordinary text characters. Like proper music scores the notes should be read from left to right.
Each number is a note. The higher the number the longer the note.
So a note represented by a number 8 is eight times as long as one represented by a 1.
1 = Eigth Note
2 = Quarter note
4 = Half note
8 = Whole note
The horizontal line on which a note/number appears tells you which musical
note should be played (A, B , C etc), just as it does in a real music score.
So the lowest line of hyphens/dashes is the note E, the next line up is G and the space
between them is F.
I have labelled all the lines and the spaces between them in a
column on the left hand side of each block.
This is what my 'music paper' looks like before it has any notes on it.
1F ---- ------------ ------ ------ ---- --------- 1E 1D ---- ------------ ------ ------ ---- --------- 1C 1Bf---- ------------ ------ ------ ---- --------- 1A G ---- ------------ ------ ------ ---- --------- F E ---- ------------ ------ ------ ---- --------- D C
so '1A' is the 'A' above middle 'C', and '1C' is the 'C' above middle 'C'.
The B line is labelled '1Bf' because in this tune all the B notes
are played as B flat. (key of F Major? ) The tune is in 4/4 time.
This score starts part way through a bar because I have left out the tricky
introduction to the music. I have started where the melody begins.
If you look at block A below you will see that this tune starts ...
C, F, E, F, C, F, 1C, 1Bf, 1c, 1A G,1A, etc
Enough talk! Now for the notes ...
